Solo show in La Galerie des Photographes

Solo show in La Galerie des Photographes

The main focus of Mindaugas Gabrenas’ photography exhibition “Passages Éphémères” is the same as the method chosen by the artist himself – a dialogue with oneself, an endless journey, transforming time into space, space into picture.

While closely observing the surrounding world with the inner child’s eyes and listeningto himself, the author creates a series of eternal wander through the maze of archetypal, abstract and universal concepts. It is the classical motif of a human journey towards oneself, unavoidable fusion with nature, Almighty. The Becoming.

Time is no less significant element of this series. Immanent in photography as a medium, thanks to long exposure it becomes visible and physically tangible. Silent and slow in the photographs, it sharply contrasts with mundane reality.

The silhouettes of people lost in time and space are unrecognisable, drowned in external or perhaps within internal worlds with no clear boundaries between them. Loneliness and longing, as a source of inspiration as well as the integral contemporary human condition, become evidently palpable.

Precise composition, unusual spaces and subtle details lure the viewer into the slightly melancholy mood of the photographs. The mold that appears on the old film negative creates a natural screen, protecting from the preposterous daily rhythm and forcing one to stop and listen.

Solo show in Robin Rice Gallery

Solo show in Robin Rice Gallery

The philosophy of the Robin Rice Gallery, based in New York City, is to offer clients beautiful, timeless images that will engage the viewer, titillate the senses and transform the total atmosphere of a space. With her expert placement and collaborative work style, the Gallery helps privately owned homes as well as commercial spaces reach their visual potential by merging the past with the present while keeping the client’s mission intact. Robin Rice has a natural instinct to read her clients needs succinctly.

The Robin Rice Gallery is pleased to present a photographic exhibition by Mindaugas Gabrenas. The opening reception will be held on Wednesday, January 17th from 6pm to 8pm. The show will run through February 25th.

In this exhibition, Mindaugas Gabrenas invites us to reflect on the poetics of place through his lyrical and surrealist imagery. His hand-printed silver gelatin prints reveal abandoned regions, wild coasts and strange territories from Lithuania to Scotland to America. As a scientific innovator, he uses unique techniques and unconventional materials in order to create his whimsical, dream photos.

In “Spinning The Wheel”, stars trace the sky in a curved motion and meet the water below creating a sense of the infinite.  As Gabrenas explores and captures landscapes through very long exposures, he actually meditates and reflects on the world around him encouraging his viewers to imagine themselves within the landscapes and dream with him.

In another image “Dream About an Empty House”, that was taken in Lithuania, we see a young girl from behind in a red polka dotted dress as she faces an abandoned home. Using his handmade camera he constructed by merging two cameras—a Kiev 88 and a Kodak Duaflex II. The viewfinder of the Duaflex serves as an additional filter on the lens of the Kiev 88, which is fixed to its body with several macro rings. Before shooting the film, he wraps it in black rye bread and waits several days for the mold to grow onto the film. The combination of these two techniques creates a sense of motion around the central figure.

“Alternatives”, our invitational image, pulls us into Gabrenas’ world. The focused close-up and abstracted view of train tracks distorts a familiar shape into a strange and unusual form. The tracks lead you in the distance, a blurry city of New York. The ironic lack of human life in New York City conveys a mystifying sense of place.

In “Something With a Head”, we’re taken to the Lithuanian seaside where silhouetted figures stand on sand dunes watching the central figure jumping off into the distance. This image is part of his “Dreamscapes”; a series of “dream projections” where the artist uses a light-leaking camera called Kiev 88 and expired Svema 64 film to give the photography a dusty and blurry quality.

Born in Lithuania, he has been influenced by a myriad of artists’ techniques including the graceful elegance of Masao Yamamoto and the intricate compositions of Michael Kenna. However, Henri Cartier Bresson has perhaps had the greatest influence on Gabrenas’ photographic process and the patience it entails.

Group Show in Galerie STP, Germany

There are events that shape the history, some may even alter its course. One of those is the 11th September 2001. In our collective memory, it has imprinted as 9/11. When you think of New York, you are inevitably reminded of the terrible scenarios that day. Unfortunately the picture, the perception of the city of New York is often reduced to this event. The aim of the exhibition “9/11-NY” isn’t exactly that.

In addition to the world famous pictures by photographer and former Magnum Chef, Thomas Hoepker of this memorable day, historical photographs and current pictures of the present, give us insights of the dazzling, fascinating metropolis of New York. Each of the exhibited photographers lets us participate in his experiences and shows us his view. Black and white art by Walter Schels, alongside with historical reportage photography by Michael Zibold, poetic images of the Lithuanian photographer Minaugas Gabrenas, modern interpretations of the Czech photographer Stepan Grygor, abstraction by Peter Konschake, the particular photographic style by Antonius and his adopted home, contemporary photography by Johanna Strauss or Daniela Risch.

Altogether the different snapshots are supposed to awaken the desire to discover this city. A town that embodies like no other the coexistence of cultures. A diversity that must be preserved.

The exhibition takes place in cooperation with the gallery Hiltawasky from Berlin and the infocus gallery in Cologne.

Photo exhibition “Back to the City”

Photo exhibition “Back to the City”

Mindaugas Gabrenas‘ latest project Back to the City was created living in New York City and traveling around the US. Here author combines his passion for landscape and cityscape photography by mixing an American wild landscape with New York City cityscape. Presenting works in diptych Gabrenas is trying to reveal unexpected visual parallels between two antagonistic concepts: natura et urbi.
Actually there‘s no need to come back to nature to distance yourself from the outside world. Seems that even busy New York City streets has enough of seclusion and melancholy – concrete jungle can make you feel forgotten and lonely like in outermost Oregon coast. Nowadays extremely popular Rousseau’s concept back to nature here is rephrased intentionally – author aims to share with us his sympathy both for theapple-tree and for the Big Apple.
Back to the City is series of black&white diptych, all the pictures were taken between 2012-2014, using medium format film cameras.

Mindaugas Gabrenas (1977) is an amateur lithuanian photographer working worldwide and currently based in Lithuania. Author of a number of personal and group exhibitions in Canada, Germany, Lithuania, Russia, Spain, UK and US, winner of various photo awards. His works were published in various photo magazines.
Last year his works were presented in International Festival of Photography PHotoEspaña (Madrid).

In Dahse Magazine

In Dahse Magazine

Dahse is a New York based publication showcasing creative inspiration in fashion art and design. The interview with Mindaugas Gabrenas was published in Dahse Magazine.

Mindaugas Gabrenas is a Lithuanian photographer who recently relocated to New York, and given what we’ve seen of his work so far, we’re quite pleased to have him. As an ambidextrous film and digital photographer, he is living proof that perhaps too much time is spent debating the merits of film vs digital photography. He proves that either can be used to communicate a vision with stunning results.

There is a distinct feeling of melancholy and isolation in his photography, accentuated by the frequent use of aged film and its distinct imperfections and blurs. This isolation somehow translates into serenity and calm, as though it is a welcome break from the madness of everyday life. Structures such as bridges, stairs, and trees form beautiful geometries in the composition of landscapes. People integrate into these landscapes in a poetic harmony that creates the mood of a fable. We had a chance to welcome Mindaugas and learn more about the photographer during a recent interview which follows.

„Dreamscapes“ – the dreams projections in photography

„Dreamscapes“ – the dreams projections in photography

The 27th of June, at 17.30 at Vilnius Photography Gallery (Stikliu str. 4, Vilnius, Lithuania) the second personal exhibition of Mindaugas Gabrenas called “Dreamscapes” will be opened.

Dreamscapes” – is the black and white dream projection in photography or an intention to show in pictures what the unconscious is trying to tell us during the sleep. Without purity and brightness, but with frequent flashes of light, strange characters, visual garbage and impurities, antigravity, size and form illusion, the melancholic surreal.

Dreamscapes” is full of ephemeral mysticism. The cycle of 20 images seems to be so far away from the realism of traditional landscape. There are only real images in the pictures. No manipulation, no additional effects. Habitual photography technique creates special effects and very often – without the author’s intentions.

Dreamscapes” was created mostly using expired soviet “Svema” films, all pictures were taken in Vilnius, Kaunas, Nida, Dzukija (Lithuania) and seaside of Latvia.

The film, which had to be thrown into the trash twenty years ago is completely unpredictable. In very often cases, photos were taken in vain, because afte the darkroom process there were no any signs of image. But sometimes result was stunning and this attracted me for further experiments. Lately I understood why one or other effect appears and started to use it as an additional tool. I should say that these expired films and my old light leaking Kiev 88 camera are the co-authors that made my works much more interesting”, M. Gabrenas said.

The exhibition “Dreamscapes” in Vilnius Photography Gallery will be opened till 14th of July.

From the 16th of July till the 10th of August the works will be exhibited in Arts and Crafts Courtyard in Klaipeda (Baznyciu str. 4, Klaipeda, Lithuania).
